Brief Profile:

Currently Dr. K. Madhavan Nair is working in the capacity of Scientist ‘F’ at the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad. He has obtained a postgraduate degree in biochemistry from the Kerala University and has a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the Osmania University, Hyderabad. He joined the NIN in the year 1980 and has since then been working in the area of micronutrient malnutrition. Dr. Nair has received training at the International Center for Control of Nutritional Anemia (ICCNA), U.S.A. in the methods of assessment of nutritional anemia, in the year 1984. During 1988-1989, he received a International Research Fellow fellowship from the Public Health Service (Fogarty International Center for Advanced Study in Health Sciences, NIH, U.S. Department of Health and Human Service) towards collaborative research and training at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas, U.S.A.

Dr. Nair’s research area over the years includes basic and applied research, and population-based intervention programs. His focus is in elucidating the mechanism of absorption and bioavailability of iron and zinc and their interactions, development and evaluation of diagnostic tests that are adaptable to field settings for the sub-clinical diagnosis of iron and vitamin A deficiencies and development and testing of intervention strategies for the control and prevention of micronutrient deficiencies. His original contributions have provided greater insight into iron absorption and iron-induced free radical damage of the intestinal villi. He has established at NIN a National centre for Vitamin A estimation, Caco-2 cell line based bioavailability screening facility and operationalized strategies for controlling iron and iodine deficiencies. He has 70 publications in National and International Journals.
Dr. Nair is an elected Fellow of the Andhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences and is member of the National Academy of Sciences, India, and Joint Secretary, Nutrition Society of India. He is a recipient of the Public Health Service International Research Fellow Award and BGRC Silver Jubilee Oration Award and Fogarty international award.
Besides research activities, he is a member of the Panel on Nutraceuticals, Dietary Supplements and Functional Foods of the FSSAI, member of the project review committee of ICMR/ DBT. He was part of the external team of scientific reviewers for the Annual Review of Significant Advances in Dietary Supplement Research, NIH, USA and coordinator of the Expert group of the ICMR for the revision of “Nutrient requirements and recommended dietary allowances fro Indians, 2010. Dr. Nair is acknowledged as a reputed teacher, guide and mentor. He is very passionate in institution building and capacity building in the area of nutrition research in the country.
